An Unexpected Journey: From Spectator to Photographer

Hey there! It’s Grace from UnsolicitedDiscPix, and I’m excited to share a tale of unexpected turns and friendship, capturing the moments of the 23rd Annual Wright Brothers Open in Xenia, Ohio.

The day began as a simple outing with Mike from DiscGolfVanLife. Mike, always eager for the sport, was participating, and I was there to support him and perhaps snap a few candid shots. As Mike wrapped up his first round, we found ourselves immersed in nostalgia, particularly reminiscing about our adventures during the previous year’s event, which was again organized by Dayton Disc Golf.

A Heartfelt Reunion: Reminiscing with Sabrina Williams

In the midst of our trip down memory lane, we had the pleasure of meeting Sabrina Williams, the esteemed Tournament Director. As we shared our cherished memories and I expressed my aspiration to photograph the event, Sabrina generously gave the green light, turning my casual visit into an official photography gig for the final round!

Clash of the Titans: Intense Competition on the Field

With this new role, I was all in. Starting it off with the Mixed Pro Open division, and it was a tough battle. Jeremiah Kraus PDGA#38737 led the pack, but the competition was tight with Sean Goddard PDGA # 86949 and Drew Cobble PDGA #182203 not far behind. The strategy, the skill, the experience—it was evident in every throw.

Beyond the Game: Cherishing the Little Moments

But beyond the scores, it was the smaller, intimate moments that truly stood out. The mutual respect between players, the shared jokes, and the sense of community were the highlights of the day for me.

Interacting with the players was a highlight of my experience. The Mixed Amateur divisions were filled with tales of dedication, growth, and community. Tyler Brophy’s resilience to hold onto the 2 stroke lead for the win, Doug Zupanic’ and B.J. Burke being tied after the 2nd and final round, and the stories of so many others painted a vivid picture of the disc golf scene in Dayton.

Rising Stars: The Young Champions of Tomorrow

Furthermore, the junior divisions were a revelation. Young talents like Mason Pierce and Claire Manson showcased their skills, hinting at a bright future for disc golf. Watching them, I was reminded of the sport’s potential and the importance of nurturing young talent.

Gratitude Overflows: Wrapping Up a Day of Memories

As the curtains drew on the event, I was overwhelmed with gratitude. From being a mere spectator to playing a pivotal role, from reliving past memories to forging new ones, the day was a rollercoaster of emotions. A heartfelt thank you to all the participants, onlookers, and a special mention to Sabrina for her generosity. Here’s to many more unexpected adventures on the course!
